The electric Ford Mustang Mach-e now costs less than the gasoline Mustang, but be careful with the comparison

In the United States, the electric Ford Mustang Mach-E is now cheaper than the thermal Mustang. This is also the case in France, where the electric SUV is incidentally “helped” by the particularly high penalty for the gasoline sports coupe.

We often hear that electric cars are too expensive, and this is something that deters many motorists at the moment. However, this argument is less and less valid today, since prices tend to fall.

Electric cheaper than thermal

And this is thanks to several factors, such as the drop in the price of lithium, but also the price war in which many manufacturers have engaged, such as Tesla and BYD, to name a few. If parity between thermal and electric cars is not yet relevant at the moment, a recent study has shown that certain zero-emission (exhaust) cars now cost less than their combustion equivalent.

And this is confirmed once again, thanks to Ford. The American site Electrek informs us that the manufacturer has just announced a significant price drop on its Mustang Mach-E in the United States. So the electric SUV is displayed from $39,995 in its entry-level version, or approximately 37,330 euros according to the current exchange rate, with a range of 250 miles according to the EPA standard (470 kilometers according to the European WLTP standard). Enough to allow it to compete with the Tesla Model Y, as in France.

However, you should know that the American manufacturer still markets its classic Mustang, which takes the form of‘a 100% thermal coupe, equipped with a four-cylinder gasoline or a V8. Radically different cars in terms of bodywork or philosophy, but the price comparison remains interesting.

In the United States, the thermal Mustang starts from 32,515 dollars, or around 30,350 euros in its entry-level version. On paper, the sports car remains a little cheaper. But it is especially important to look at the long-term rental offer.

Taking into account the discount and the first intake, the Mach-E is offered at $424 per month, or around 395 euros. For its part, the thermal version costs the equivalent of 525 dollars each month, which gives 489 euros.

The electric SUV therefore becomes more financially attractive, especially since we know that driving with this engine is significantly more economical than gasoline. And this is because of fuel costs, but also for maintenance, which is much more limited on an electric car.

And in France ?

These prices concern the American market, but what about France? Here, electric cars generally always cost more than their thermal equivalents, even if parity should arrive from the year 2027, according to certain specialists. Taking a look at the Ford site, we see that the Mustang Mach-E starts from 52,990 eurosbut that the SUV benefits from a discount which brings it to 43,370 euros.

For its part, the thermal Mustang, which is only available with a 5.0 liter V8 here, displays an entry ticket from 59,300 euros. It is therefore significantly more expensive than the Mach-E. Especially since she also has to face a particularly high penalty of 60,000 euros. Which gives a total of 119,300 euros once tax is included. Not to mention fuel costs, with an approved average consumption of 12 l/100 km.

You should know that the Ford Mustang Mach-E is no longer eligible for the ecological bonus of 4,000 euros, and that it therefore does not appear on the list published by the government at the start of the year. Finally, let’s not forget that the Mustang Mach-E will very soon be joined by the Explorer, another less sporty but less expensive electric car, especially since it will be eligible for the bonus in France.
