Mini is actively preparing its second generation of the electric Mini. This new version will be available with two different batteries of 40 and 54 kWh. A real plus for this model whose lack of autonomy was the main defect.
Some information is confirmed for the next engines and batteries associated with the new generation of the electric Mini. Scheduled for the end of 2023 in France, the model will be offered with two battery capacities (40 and 54 kWh) and two engines (184 and 218 hp) according to an article published on March 7 by the English site Autocar.co.uk. A way for Mini to make a clean sweep of one of the main criticisms of the previous generation: too low autonomy.
The Mini Cooper SE, or Mini Hatch for other countries, will soon no longer be the brand’s only electric reference. Mini Countryman and Mini Aceman should soon complete the collection of 100% electric models, by offering other universes and other engines.
The electric Mini will be able to drive more
The current Mini Cooper SE is an undeniable commercial success. In 2022, it was the 11th best-selling electric car in France, with 5,809 registrations. However, the model has two main flaws: a little too limited autonomy and a particularly premium price. The new version of the Mini will be able to erase this first defect. As for the second, it will probably be necessary to wait a little to know the tariff positioning, which will perhaps be higher than the current 37,400 €.
The advantage of this new generation is that the Mini Cooper SE will offer two choices:
- 40 kWh battery with 184 hp motor;
- 54 kWh battery with a new 218 hp motor.
The current model offers a unique configuration, with a 32.6 kWh battery and 184 hp motor. The entry-level version will retain the same engine, but with a significantly larger battery. The second version will be equipped with a new engine. Both versions will remain two-wheel-drive vehicles.
On the exact autonomy, Autocar.co.uk evokes 385 kilometers of minimum autonomy, against 231 kilometers for the model sold today by Mini. This information requires confirmation.
The size is the same but the style changes
The Electric Mini will keep the same length of 3.8 m. On the other hand, several design elements will be reviewed with this new version. Bigger wheels, new daytime running lights and a longer wheelbase, which will offer more space on board, are on the program.
In electric version, the model will only be available in its 3-door version. For the 5-door versions and the convertible, it will be necessary to turn to the gasoline engine version. Unless you opt for the Cabriolet version in a limited edition of 999 copies and more than €60,000.
A JCW sports version in 2025?
During an interview with Stefanie Wurst, the director of Mini, the Autocar site had confirmation that a sports version John Cooper Works (JCW) should see the light of day in mid-2025. It would be based on the 54 kWh battery, but with greater power, around 250 hp. In the crosshairs of this sports car: the Abarth 500e, which will occupy the field alone while waiting for the arrival of this sports Mini.
