The end of the printed receipt scheduled for 2023

Soon the end of the receipt? From January 1, 2023, businesses will be prohibited from printing it automatically.

This is a decree for the application of the anti-waste law. This aims to produce less paper waste. With a few exceptions, the automatic printing of a ticket will therefore be suppressed, regardless of the amount of purchases.

“I have already got into the habit of not taking a receipt when I think of keeping the article, testifies a consumer at the microphone of CNEWS. But as far as sending by email is concerned, I have doubts, emails are still polluting.

A perplexity shared by consumer associations. Twelve of them, including UFC-Que Choisir and Familles Rurales, considered that the decree opened the way “to a forced dematerialization of the ticket”, “likely to facilitate via marketing techniques the creation of a database of data by merchants”.

More generally, they demanded on April 19 that the printing of a ticket be “systematically offered”. Its removal “results in depriving consumers of real choice”.

According to the associations, the receipt, “proof of purchase”, remains “a tool for managing the family budget” and makes it possible to “verify the accuracy of the amount of the transaction”.
