Indeed, this Sunday, February 19, Gérald Darmanin, the Minister of the Interior, indicated on his Twitter account his wish to “remove point deductions for speeding less than 5 km/h”. On the other hand, the fine will be maintained. “I want to be understanding with those who work”, explains Gérald Darmanin in his tweet.

Since the accident caused by Pierre Palmade, road safety has been the subject of debate in the country. Gérald Darmanin has therefore indicated that he wishes to withdraw the driving license for motorists who drive after having consumed drugs or alcohol. “They are a potential danger” concludes the Minister of the Interior. As a reminder, the number of road deaths increased in 2022 compared to the previous year.

Speeding at the wheel: current penalties

Currently, for speeding less than 20 km/h, the driver systematically loses a point on his driving licence. He must also pay a fine of 135 euros if the maximum authorized speed is 50 km/h, and 68 euros if the maximum authorized speed is greater than 50 km/h. In both cases, the price of the fine decreases if payment is made promptly. It goes from 135 euros to 90 euros for the first case and from 68 euros to 45 euros in the second case.

Asked by The Midi Dispatch, Pierre Chasseray, the general delegate of 40 million motorists says he is in favor of canceling the withdrawal of points. “It’s very good, we have to do it! 5 km / h, we are on an involuntary excess of speed. Driving at 84 km / h on a road limited to 80 does it make us a driver? No “ did he declare. Before continuing: “The real problem is not that. It’s the 80 and 90 km/h, the incessant variations of speed limits everywhere on the territory”.
