The Nicky Hayden drama never ends. Four years have passed since the US motorcycle star’s fatal accident in Misano.
On May 22, 2017, the MotoGP world champion from 2006 died at the age of 35 in the hospital in Cesena after being hit by a car on his racing bike five days earlier. A moment of inattention that destroyed life.
Hayden’s – but also that of the driver involved in the accident. The 34-year-old has been going through hell since that tragic day.
Accident driver does not work and is depressed
“He never recovered from this shock,” said his lawyers Pierluigi Autumn and Francesco Pisciotti to “il Resto del Carlino”. “He stopped working and suffers from depression.”
Less than a year and a half after the accident, the man from Morciano near Rimini was sentenced to one year in prison for street murder. Even public prosecutor Paolo Gengarelli noted during the trial that there were “two victims” in this case.
Appeal and civil action for 15 million euros are ongoing
But just: the driver involved in the accident drove 22.8 km / h too fast in the 50s. Hayden didn’t stand a chance. The legal battle continues to this day. The attorneys have appealed and are pending the hearing. You are in good spirits. Also because Hayden was wearing headphones and ignoring a stop sign.
That is no consolation. Neither for the convict nor for Hayden or his family. Through Nicky’s girlfriend and the company that represents his interests, she filed a civil lawsuit against the driver involved in the accident and his insurance. The case has been going on for several months before the Milan court. The claim for damages amounts to 15 million euros.
“Four years later, the boy suffers like on the day of the accident”
The processes put a strain on the driver involved in the accident, as his lawyer Pierluigi Autumn reveals: “Four years later, the boy is suffering like on the bloody day in May when the accident occurred.”
After the accident and trial, he was no longer able to lead a normal life. “He’s still devastated by Nicky’s death and all of its aftermath.” (sme)
