PARIS (Reuters) – The president of the Energy Regulation Commission (CRE) on Wednesday called on the French to make a “collective effort” in terms of energy consumption, while ensuring that France should not encounter any supply problem due to the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“We need to collectively make an effort. I said collectively. It’s an effort of solidarity, for those who can. There is no obligation. It’s better that way,” said Jean-Francois Carenco on BFM TV.

“Everything will be fine. That’s my absolute conviction. But it’s normal to say to the French: ‘be careful anyway’. If you can, you heat up a little less. If you think about it, you turn off the light. If you can, you drive slower, it will consume less,” he added.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has caused energy prices to soar and fears of energy supply problems in Europe, mainly Russian gas.
