DEMOGRAPHICS- The life expectancy at birth of Americans fell significantly between 2019 and 2020, dropping from 78.8 years to only 77. An unprecedented drop for 75 years. Population growth was also the lowest on record.

The life expectancy of Americans has fallen sharply with the Covid-19 epidemic, dropping in one year from 78.8 years to 77 years, according to figures from the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC). The Covid-19, unknown a year earlier, came to rank third among the most common causes of death in the United States. The US Census Bureau also established on Wednesday that the population had increased only 0.1% over one year, unprecedented even if the trend existed before the onset of the pandemic.

Coronavirus: the pandemic shaking up the planet
If the United States has already passed 800,000 deaths, for nearly 332 million inhabitants, the effects of the Covid-19 epidemic are now also perceptible in the calculation of the life expectancy of Americans. This index is an estimate of the average lifespan of a population that would live its entire existence under the conditions of a given year. It is also very different between men and women: the life expectancy of American men is now only 74.2 years, while that of women is now 79.9 years, widening the pre-existing gap of more than six months, from one year to the next.
Fewer births, more deaths
The epidemic also seems to have accelerated the decline in population growth, which is only 0.1%. The US population now stands at nearly 331.9 million. “Population growth has been slowing for years”, explains Kristie Wilder, demographer at the census office, “due to falling birth rates and decreasing international migration, while the death rate is increasing due to the country’s aging population”. “With the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic”, continues the specialist, “this combination has resulted in a historically slow pace of growth”.

As an indirect consequence of the pandemic, many urban Americans have chosen to leave the highly urbanized areas of the northeast, to reach the less populated territories of the west. Texas is thus registering a strong growth of 1.1% of its population, thanks mainly to some 170,000 Americans from another state, who have chosen to settle there.
