The essential tips to know to use Notion well

Notion is a very powerful software, but sometimes a bit cluttered. However, it is full of very advanced tools to do almost what you want. Here are a few.

Notion is a note-taking application that adapts to all your needs, personal and professional. It also offers a collaborative working system.

Create columns

One of my favorite features in Notion is the ability to create columns. This helps you organize information and make it easier to find. Say, for example, you have a page with multiple bookmarks, like this:

Suppose I want to group favorites related to Mac news in one column and favorites related to Apple Fitness in another. To do this, simply drag the block to the right of the current column and when you see a blue vertical line appear, release the mouse button.

If you want to place multiple items at the top of a column, grab them, then move your mouse until you see a line appear below the column, like this:

Voila, your column is well organized!

Give titles to your columns

It is easy to create a column title. Just click to create a new block, then type /h1. Once you’ve entered your title, you can right-click on the drop zone to change its color. If your title is not where you want it, drag it until you see the blue line where you want it and release the mouse button.

Convert elements using “Turn Into”

You can easily change most items in a column using the “Turn Into” command. As with all of our other tips, right-click to the left of the item you want and select Turn Into. You will then see the different options available. I am going to choose Toggle H2and I’ll show you why in the next tip.

Collapse/expand columns

Suppose I decide to keep adding favorites and categories. After a while, the page becomes long and it is difficult to find what you are looking for. But if you turn the different categories into clickable buttons and put them under the column title, you can expand and collapse just the area you want to see.

Create a digital tote

To keep your well-organized pages from becoming too cluttered, create a dedicated section for incoming notes. You can keep them here until you decide to move them elsewhere.

Use the favorites area

A quick way to access key pages is to use the favorites area in the sidebar. Just click on the star at the top right of the page to add it to favorites.

Create a main page that links to key pages

You can use columns and page links to create a central page that links to your other important pages. This is another great way to quickly navigate to your content.

Use a Notion model

Notion offers a long list of templates and there are even people online who sell custom templates. To begin, click on the item Models at the bottom left of your dashboard or head over to Notion’s Templates page.
