“The European Parliament should immediately summon Elon Musk and audition him in Brussels”

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, warns humanity against the dangers of artificial intelligence (IA). The lightning progress of ChatGPT makes him fear that “machines are flooding our information channels with propaganda and untruths” at point “losing control of our civilization”.

This message should be taken very seriously. Elon Musk is arguably one of the most legitimate people in the world to talk about artificial intelligence (AI). He is the originator of ChatGPT, self-driving cars and reusable, AI-powered rockets.

He also created the company Neuralink, which specializes in interfaces controlled by the brain without going through a mouse or a joystick, and is launching a new competitor to ChatGPT. He can even allow himself to tackle Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates for their knowledge “limited” of AI.

A threat to which he contributes

Its message is supported by hundreds of recognized experts. Eight Eastern European Prime Ministers Urge Big Tech [les Google, Amazon, Tesla, Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta, Intel] to contain the Russian disinformation war which aims to “destabilize our countries and weaken our democracies”. NATO recognizes that, while propaganda is not new, its scale and intensity are growing alarmingly. Italy has decided to block access to ChatGPT.

Do not be fooled by the game of Elon Musk, who denounces a threat to which he contributes, because fake news has proliferated on Twitter since he took control. This game also promotes the interests of his company Neuralink. This one wants to put implants in our brains on the grounds of keeping control over the machines, but comes up against the refusal of a license from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) [l’autorité de santé américaine]. By barely caricaturing the style of science fiction to which he has accustomed us, he agitates the threat of a Terminator, an instrument of authoritarianism, so that we let him manufacture his Robocop, a supposedly more intelligent cyborg.

The European Parliament should immediately summon Elon Musk and audition him in Brussels, then his counterparts from other Big Techs. The message of the leader of Tesla expresses a desire for cooperation between public and private, of which act, and the magnitude of the threat justifies the urgent construction of parades against misinformation.

The first parry is to identify misinformation. We already know that the main cause of the danger comes from the programming mode of the AI, which leads to a “black box” whose results no one, not even programmers, can explain. Malicious or military use of this tool therefore escapes the control of its designers.
