BRUSSELS (Reuters) – European Union (EU) leaders are divided over whether to put Ukraine on a path to membership and should instead discuss an enhanced partnership, the EU said on Wednesday. a leader of the European bloc.

The official, who is helping prepare for the European summit in Versailles on Thursday and Friday and spoke on condition of anonymity, said all the leaders were in favor of strengthening ties with Ukraine.

“But the question is whether they will find a consensus for enlargement, which is sometimes more delicate,” he said.

“Joining could take time,” he added.

According to the official, European leaders will discuss strengthening Kyiv’s ties with their single market and connecting Ukraine to their energy grid under an enhanced partnership or “association plus plus”.
