“The Exorcist: Confession” disappointed at the box office, but the flop of the horror film is now leading to a particularly early release on stream!

- Universal brought forward the theatrical release of “The Exorcist: Confession” so that Taylor Swift’s concert film wouldn’t steal the audience from the horror sequel.
- An unnecessary precaution, because even without competition from Taylor Swift, the new “Exorcist” is failing at the box office.
- In order to make money with the film shortly before Halloween, the film was already released on stream.
Between 2018 and 2022, Universal breathed new life into the “Halloween” series with three new films. This last trilogy with Jamie Lee Curtis didn’t convince all fans, but the films were successful enough and new “Halloween” films are already planned.
Now Universal is taking on another horror franchise: “The Exorcist.” Just like the latest “Halloween” parts, David Gordon Green was behind the camera for “The Exorcist: Confession” and a trilogy is once again planned. But will this actually happen?
This exorcist is driving audiences out of the cinemas
Horror films are usually quite cheap to produce and so the box office doesn’t have to be sensationally high to be considered a success. But Universal spent $400 million on the rights to “The Exorcist” alone, so the $45 million the film grossed on its opening weekend is a huge disappointment.
Added to this are the catastrophic reviews, which mean that Universal cannot hope that interest in “The Exorcist: Confession” will increase in the coming weeks. In such a case, there is only one emergency solution: publication on stream!

As a Universal production, “The Exorcist: Confession” will one day end up on the US streaming service Peacock, but the film has been available to rent and buy since October 24, 2023.

When will “The Exorcist: Confession” be streamed in Germany?
You cannot yet rent or buy “The Exorcist: Confession” from German streaming services. Peacock is no longer available in Germany, which is why Universal titles are offered by Sky and Wow in this country. However, this is not expected until spring 2024 at the earliest.
“The Exorcist: Confession” will of course be available as a digital purchase and rental title sooner, but a release at the end of 2023 is at least possible. However, horror fans who are not put off by the bad reviews should take advantage of iTunes’ US offering.
