Spoiler alert!

Our comparisons between the “Fall of the House of Usher” episodes and the works of Edgar Allan Poe occasionally refer to events from future episodes. So don’t read on until you’ve already seen the entire Netflix series!

“The Fall of the House of Usher” makes no secret of the fact that all 6 of Roderick Usher’s children die, but the circumstances of their deaths remain secret until the end of each episode – unless you are familiar with the works of Edgar Allan Poe.

Even though the Netflix series takes a lot of liberties, the deaths of most of the characters are closely linked to Poe’s originals. A small advantage for Poe fans, everyone else gets all the necessary background information about the allusions to Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories through our explanatory articles.

The company where Victorine LaFourcade conducts her experiments on orangutans was once called “Roderick Usher Experimental”, but is simply called “Rue Morgue” by the Usher children – a small Poe reference in Episode 2, which is repeated in Episode 3 The consequence can be seen even more clearly.

In “Murder in the Rue Morgue” by Edgar Allan Poe, detective C. Auguste Dupin investigates a mysterious crime. That’s right, in Poe Dupin is a detective who solves his cases through his brilliant powers of deduction – a novelty in the mid-19th century, which is why Dupin is considered a role model for Sherlock Holmes.

In the story, Madame L’Espanaye and her daughter Camille were brutally murdered. Since there were no signs of forced entry and the L’Espanayes lived on the fourth floor, investigators couldn’t figure it out.

Ultimately, Dupin realized that the crime was committed by an orangutan who had fled from his owner, a sailor. Since he always watched the sailor shaving, the orangutan in the L’Espanayes’ apartment also reached for a razor – with terrible consequences.

Even though it is Vic who experiments on the orangutans in “The Fall of the House of Usher”, Poe experts could of course conclude early on that Camille would ultimately fall victim to the great ape.
