Rosetta no longer plays the role of intermediary between ExpressVPN and Apple Silicon Macs: from version 11.5.0, the M1 and M2 natively support VPN.

Our 2022 comparison of the best VPNs gives ExpressVPN the prize in terms of performance. If the latter is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux systems, those who use it on an Apple machine now benefit from native support, regardless of the processor.

Almost two years after the release of the M1

Indeed, the latest ExpressVPN version for macOS, v11.5.0, works natively on Apple Silicon Macs; in other words, those equipped with an M1 or M2 processor. According to the company’s press release, this support guarantees better performance and by extension, induces a drop in hardware resources and therefore better battery life.

The apple brand launched its M1 chip in November 2020. Since then, the M1 family has grown significantly with the M1 Pro, M1 Max and M1 Ultra. A second line has also recently emerged, that of the M2 chip. All of these chips gradually replaced Intel processors in Macs.

Many applications are now natively supported by Apple Silicon chips. Otherwise, the Rosetta software takes care of converting applications designed exclusively for Mac computers so that they can be used with the Apple chip. This conversion usually works very well, but of course, nothing beats native support.

This is now the case for ExpressVPN. The latest version of the VPN also affects Intel systems. The company therefore invites Mac Intel users to also update.
