The fifth generation – New Range Rover: Luxury from V8 to fully electric

A good 50 years after the presentation of the original Range Rover, Jaguar Land Rover is now bringing the latest generation of the mighty luxury SUV: Based on a new platform, it should not only offer maximum comfort, but also plug-in hybrids with a long electric range and even a pure Stromer variant.

Unlike the (Land Rover) Defender, which was built for almost 70 years with practically no fundamental changes, the new Range Rover is already the fifth generation.

The flagship of the British is by default 5.05 meters long, (including antenna) 1.87 meters high and (without mirrors) 2.05 meters wide (with mirrors 2.21 meters). The wheelbase is 3 meters. In view of the dimensions, the curb weight of the lightest version of 2379 can almost be described as delicate.

The Range Rover is designed for pure luxury, you can hardly get as far off-road as comfortably as with it. The adaptive air suspension is standard, as is the rear-wheel steering, which with a steering angle of up to seven degrees ensures a turning circle of less than eleven meters. It doesn’t really have to be said that basically all four wheels are driven.

The rear axle is equipped with a limited slip differential. The “Terrain Response 2” system supports the driver with six presets, a user-defined mode and automatic selection off the beaten track. The ground clearance is 30 centimeters. Water crossings are possible up to 90 centimeters deep.

The roll stabilization “Dynamic Response Pro”, which, thanks to 48 volts, can deliver up to 1400 Nm into the chassis to prevent the body from tilting, ensures speedy and comfortable driving on asphalt.

The interior looks very tidy. Nevertheless, Land Rover has not done without a dedicated climate control. Good this way. The central touchscreen is a 13.1-inch curved display, the speedometer display is also digital and can also be configured with different views. Amazon’s Alexa is integrated, you don’t have to connect a phone to use it. But you can wirelessly via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A Meridian sound system with 35 loudspeakers (two of which in the headrests) ensures adequate sound. Active noise canceling is standard.

The doors are optionally electrically operated and can block briefly if it is not possible to open them safely, for example because a vehicle is approaching.

The combustion engine range includes three six-cylinder diesels (250, 300 and 350 hp), two six-cylinder mild hybrid petrol engines with 360 and 400 hp (all 48-volt mild hybrids) and a 4.4-liter V8 with 530 hp.

There are also the two plug-in hybrids P440e and P510e with 440 and 510 HP system output. Its lithium-ion battery, which stores a net 31.8 kWh (gross 38.2 kWh), enables an electric WLTP range of up to 100 kilometers and a top electric speed of 140 km / h.

A battery-electric version of the Range Rover is to be launched in 2024. There is no further information on this yet.

The new Range Rover is available in a handcrafted SV version as well as with seven seats and an extended wheelbase.

The price list in Austria starts at 140,301 euros for the Range Rover D250 SE.
