the film is a failure, it’s a disaster

The Joker 2 movie was released after months of waiting, but unfortunately, it was clearly not the success expected. It’s even a certain failure (for the moment) at the box office.

The much awaited Joker 2also known as Joker: Folie à Deuxfailed to attract crowds as expected. With only $40 million in revenue in its opening weekend, the film fell well short of expectations. This figure is all the more surprising when we remember that the first Jokerreleased in 2019, exploded the counters with 96 million dollars in its first days.

A start well below the first film for Joker 2

The difference between the two films is striking. Joker 2 made almost three times less revenue than the first part. However, the latter not only won over the public, but also the critics, winning several Oscars and exceeding a billion dollars in revenue worldwide. With an estimated budget of $200 million for this sequel, expectations were inevitably high. But, for the moment, the startup is very far from fulfilling the initial promises.

What makes the situation even more worrying is that the start of Joker 2 is lower than that of films already considered box office failures. For example, The Flash And The Marvelstwo superhero films that didn’t really convince, still did better when they were released. Worse still, the figures for Joker 2 are close to those of Morbius ($39 million), a film which was widely criticized by the public and the press.

Why such a flop for Joker 2?

Several factors can explain this timid start. First, competition at the box office is tough, with several major releases at the same time. Then, this sequel took a risky turn by adopting a musical comedy format, with Lady Gaga in the role of Harley Quinn. This bold artistic choice may have destabilized some fans of the first film, darker and more focused on the character of Arthur Fleck, played by Joaquin Phoenix.

Even though Joaquin Phoenix was back as the Joker, it wasn’t enough to recreate the magic of the first film. The surprise aspect and the attraction of discovering a new vision of the Joker have probably disappeared, giving way to a more measured curiosity.
