Amazon would like to strengthen its Amazon Prime subscription with the integration of a mobile plan. The firm is already negotiating with operators.
The Amazon Prime subscription is unique in the market in that it integrates very different services. Originally intended to cover the fast deliveries of the online store, the subscription today includes music, video, video games, and many other things.
Amazon is said to be developing a new subscription extension to recruit new customers. The firm would be interested in the integration of a free mobile plan.
Discussions with operators
According to Bloomberg, Amazon is already in discussion with several operators in the United States such as Verizon and T-Mobile. The firm would like to obtain a wholesale price low enough to offer a free mobile plan to its customers or a plan at 10 dollars per month. Amazon would also have gone to see AT&T, the American incumbent operator, without result.
The newspaper explains that the negotiations could still take several months and that the project could still be completely abandoned by Amazon before seeing the light of day.
Boost growth
In 2022, Amazon announced a severe increase in the price of its subscription in France, which could go up to 42% increase. The price increase also took place in other countries, including the United States. The firm had to very logically lose a certain number of subscribers with these price changes. Bloomberg mentions a stagnation in the level of subscribers with regard to the United States. By adding a mobile plan, Amazon would undoubtedly like to boost the growth of its service. Especially since the American market is not the most competitive in the world when it comes to telephony.
The launch of such a service in France is not yet on the agenda. It would be interesting to see how Amazon could compete with other virtual operators. Brands like Prixtel, Syma or Youprice already offer interesting offers.
