Stanway shoots Bayern to victory in the 98th minute

Georgia Stanway is the heroine of the evening in the Champions League: The European champion shot FC Bayern Munich to victory against Benfica Lisbon in the Champions League – in the 98th minute! Coach Alexander Straus’ team won 3-2 (0-1) in Portugal. The Englishwoman Stanway (83rd) only managed to equalize late – and then the winning goal (90th + 8th). It was her first two goals for her new club.
“We made it difficult for ourselves today. Of course it wasn’t our plan to be 2-0 down,” said Stanway. “But we stood together, fought back and rewarded ourselves with three points – that counts.” Their coach said: “I’m very happy. It was an important win for us, but we have to stop playing games like that. Actually, we have to decide the game in the first half, but we’re going with a 0-1 draw. down at the break.” But he emphasized: “Over the 90 minutes, we were the better team.”
For the Munich team it was the second win in the second group game in the premier class. This was hard earned. The Brazilian Nycole Raysla (42nd) and the Canadian Cloé Lacasse (59th) played out what was actually a safe lead for the hosts. But Maximiliane Rall (67th minute) shortened before Stanway turned the game around. The Brazilian Ana Vitória failed in the 89th minute with a penalty kick on FCB goalkeeper Maria Luisa Grohs.
Captain Lina Magull was injured when she headed the ball in the 53rd minute, had to be treated on the pitch for several minutes and was finally carried off the pitch on a stretcher. Nothing is known about the severity of her injury.
In Group D, the Munich team is in second place, level on points with leaders FC Barcelona. The Catalans won 4-1 at FC Rosengard earlier in the evening. Last week, the Munich team had already won 2-1 against the Swedes in Group D. Benfica had lost their first group game against this year’s finalists and favorites FC Barcelona 0-9. FC Bayern will not meet the Spaniards in the premier class until the end of November.
