The fixed telephone continues its slow agony

According to Arcep data, and after a brief jolt caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, landline telephones continued their slow path to oblivion during the fourth quarter of 2021.

Do you still remember your landline phone ringing? Is it just still plugged in? According to’Electronic Communications Observatory Arcep, voice consumption has never been as low as in the fourth quarter of 2021 on fixed networks. During this period, the French spent an average of 1 hour 25 minutes per month on the telephone from a landline (via box or RTC), which is a historic low.

However, the French seemed to have remembered the existence of their fix with the pandemic. During the first confinement, these subscribers had even increased their monthly consumption by 30 min in one year, reaching 2 h 17 min per subscriber on average in the second quarter of 2020, while it had been falling sharply since 2013. The trend did not last . Worse, the tumble accelerated with -25% on these “voice box and PSTN” accesses in the last quarter.

Mobile traffic had also increased sharply during the first confinement to reach 4 h 27 min of communication per month and per subscriber. It has since stabilized at 3 h 48 min, at a higher level than those observed before the health crisis, but down several points compared to the second quarter of 2021.

Finally, the SMS also continues to decline in the hearts of the French, where it is replaced by various instant messaging services (WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, etc.). Arcep estimates that each SIM card only sends an average of 128 SMS/month.
