VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – Pope Francis has renewed his confidence in the former Archbishop of Paris Michel Aupetit, the latter said in an interview published on Friday by Vatican News.

“Pope Francis renewed his support for me after my resignation as Archbishop of Paris,” the prelate told the Vatican news outlet.

“He also wanted to show his confidence by asking me to remain the Roman Congregation for Bishops,” he added.

The sovereign pontiff accepted last December the resignation of Bishop Aupetit, who had submitted it to him following a press report lending him an intimate and consented relationship with a woman in 2012.

Bishop Aupetit, 70, denied having had an intimate relationship with the woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, while acknowledging that his attitude may have seemed ambiguous.
