The 2022 edition of the digital barometer, a study carried out by the Research Center for the Study and Observation of Living Conditions (Crédoc) for Arcep, CGE, ARCOM and ANCT, delivers its conclusions . One of the most striking elements is the time spent by the French in front of a device equipped with a screen (television, computer, tablet, smartphone, etc.).

In 2022, we spent an average of 32 hours per week on a screen. The report points out that this represents “one-fifth of a person’s total available time (168 hours per week)” and “a little less than a third (29% exactly) of the available time excluding sleep”. The study thus confirms that electronic terminals now punctuate our lifestyles.

Men and executives, major screen consumers

The data was collected from 4,184 respondents, constituting a representative sample of the French population. 30% of respondents spend at least 5 hours a day in front of screens and 23% between 3 and 5 hours a day. Only 2% never look at a screen and 9% limit themselves to less than an hour a day.

Heavy screen users are mostly men. 34% of them spend at least five hours a day in front of screens, compared to 26% among women. If the barometer indicates that the smartphone has become more democratized with an equipment rate of 87% (up three points compared to 2020), it is not necessarily young people and their mobiles that are the cause of such figures. students. “The time spent in front of screens increases with age, driven by the hours spent in front of the small screen of seniors”explains the study.

We also learn that the socio-professional category plays a role in observed screen time. Executives, for example, are among the very big consumers of screens: 38% of them spend at least 5 hours a day in front of screens, which is probably explained by more frequent use of the computer in a professional setting.
