OFor a long time we have heard about the famous narcissistic pervert. Among young people, another archetype has now eclipsed it: the fuckboy ; a rather attractive young man, dressed fashionably, sure that his charms seduce the fairer sex, which he takes full advantage of to multiply carnal relations without attachments.
If the appearance of the expression is difficult to date, some explain that it is a homophobic insult originating from the black community. According to American journalist Pete Earley, in The Hot House. Life Inside Leavenworth Prison (Bantam Books, 1992, untranslated), it comes from penitentiary jargon and qualifies “a prisoner who is not homosexual but is forced into prostitution by a pimp”. With the popularity of hip-hop in the 2000s and the advent of social networks from the following decade, it took on a new connotation of a smooth talker with toxic masculinity.
This archetype is part of what is called the hookup culture, that is to say the culture of hyperconsumption of sex without a future. It is thanks to dating applications that the term is widely distributed. Far from being a swear word, this term is highly valued by both men and women (whose equivalents are immediately less nice!).
THE fuckboy always one step ahead of everything, including trends. For example, he was one of the first men to wear a necklace of shells or pearls around his neck. Always wearing the latest pair of fashionable sneakers, he has an unmistakable style. Loose jeans, large sweatshirt, mid-length hair swept back with curly hair (which he calls natural even though we all know it’s a permanent), he loves mainstream rap. But also the world of skateboarders – even though he has probably never touched a board –, which he lets people know by spending huge sums on clothing branded Thrasher, Champion, Fila… To reinforce his coolness, he shortens his first name and asks to be called “Ben”, “Tom” or “Alex”.
Very connected, he will nevertheless tell you without shame that he has “ had no battery for three days » or that his “phone was buggy”thus preventing him from canceling the appointment to which you arrived dolled up and from which you left alone, outraged.
A section of hidden applications
This handsome adonis is so passionate about his image that he could easily pass for an influencer. Indeed, he photographs himself from all angles at every moment of his life (outings, parties, friends, etc.) and obviously posts his selfies – always with the same blasé look. You don’t understand why he never puts photos of you on his Instagram profile. To reassure you, he responds straight away that people who flaunt their relationship are ridiculous (and fake!), that he prefers to prioritize your intimacy as a couple. Very cute. Especially when you later discover that he spends his days on the app scrolling through photos of young Venuses in swimsuits, which he then comments on. Or, if he is more experienced, to whom he sends a DM, a private message, to avoid leaving traces…
