The future of USB-C is here, it’s called USB4 2.0

After Thunderbolt, Display Port, Power Delivery, USB 2.0, USB 3.2 Gen 1, USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, USB4… here is USB4 2.0. We explain to you what will change.

USB Type-C sounds simple, but it’s not. It is a connector that transports power and data with a multitude of different standards (Thunderbolt, Display Port, Power Delivery, USB 2.0, USB 3.2 Gen 1, USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, USB4 …). Things will still evolve.

The organization responsible, the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), has officially released documentation for USB4 version 2.0. This announcement comes a few weeks after that of Thunderbolt 5. The new USB standards and the Thunderbolt interface go hand in hand. As Numerama specifies, we are not talking about USB5. However, the nomenclature could have evolved in this direction.

USB4 version 2.0 is now official

As announced last September, the USB4 version 2.0 standard will take advantage of existing 40 Gbps USB-C cables to achieve twice the speed, up to 80 Gbps bidirectional. This faculty is permitted by the use of a new physical layer architecture based on PAM3 signal coding », develops the USB-IF. The USB-IF however opted for a conservative nomenclature, when they could have called it USB5.

The old cables will work, but there will also be cables dedicated to USB4 at 80 Gbit/s. The USB4 v2 comes with a “ updated data and display protocols to better utilize increased available bandwidth “. It is also indicated, in very specific circumstances, that the speed can reach 120 Gbit/s. Additionally, USB4 v2 aligns with recent updates to the Display Port 2.1 and PCI Express 4. Linked to USB4, the specifications of USB Type-C (connectivity) and Power Delivery (fast charging) have also been updated.

USB-C has a long way to go, USB4 2.0 will not arrive before 2024. At the moment, we are mainly talking about USB 3.x.
