Sony is already looking to the future and considering a new version of its PlayStation Plus subscriptions and it could be more advantageous.
Faced with an Xbox Game Pass which was gaining ground, Sony began the transformation of PS Plus in June 2022. The Japanese publisher launched two new formulas in response to its competitor. On the one hand, the Extra offer, offering a catalog of games growing every month and approaching what is done with the green brand. On the other hand, Premium which also offers an offer of classics and some additional advantages such as streaming PS5 games or the possibility of testing some productions for several hours. However, it seems that the Japanese manufacturer is considering other changes for its service.
PS Plus on other platforms?
PlayStation Plus everywhere and all the time? Why not ? According to internal documents stolen from Insomniac Games, Sony is already thinking about the future of its subscription offering. With the new version installed for a year, the publisher wanted to convert it into an “essential” subscription service. This ultimately went through a formula closer to what its main competitor does, while surfing on the nostalgic fiber and its well-stocked catalog of classics from the PS1 to PS3 era. With this PS Plus 3.0 his vision would be even more ambitious: to create the “most exciting and desirable” global entertainment service. Just that. Its avenues for achieving its goals: extending its offering beyond consoles and video games.
PS Plus could then open up to other platforms, including mobile, streaming, smart TVs or even web browsers. This would then only involve streaming, which would explain PlayStation’s significant investments in the Cloud recently. The publisher is also looking for ways to better adapt its strategy in terms of content, by exploring, for example, ways to make its service more attractive for players who are fans of free-to-play, or for example for families with children.
Towards more advantageous offers?
To go further and strengthen its position, Sony is mainly considering joining forces with other giants in related industries. In other words, PS Plus could offer additional offers to its service such as Disney+, Spotify or Crunchyroll, be installed on FireTV, AndroidTV, or integrate paid gaming services such as GTA+, Hoyoverse or Fortnite offers. With this new strategy, Sony would like to attract a wider range of players and target even more profiles.
