The Galaxy Z Flip 6 could say goodbye to the crease of its screen thanks to this change


For fans of foldable devices, the dreaded screen crease has been an inevitable compromise in adopting this new form factor, but it could soon all but disappear on the next Samsung smartphones.

A recent rumor suggests that Samsung could be getting closer to a solution for its upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 6, promising less bending of the screen and a smoother folding experience. According to TheElec, a Korean publication, Samsung plans to increase the thickness of the ultra-thin glass (UTG) on the Galaxy Z Flip 6. The thickness of the UTG would increase from 30 microns on the Flip 5 to around 50 microns on the next model. This seemingly subtle adjustment could have a significant impact on reducing the visibility of the device screen crease.

The thicker UTG layer should not only lessen the appearance of the crease, but also potentially improve screen durability, a crucial consideration for foldable devices subject to repeated bending. Additionally, the report suggests that Samsung could retain the waterdrop hinge introduced on the Flip 5, a design meticulously tested to withstand nearly 200,000 bends while minimizing creasing.

Samsung wants to put an end to the fold on its screens

While these improvements could alleviate one of the most persistent criticisms of foldable smartphones, the report suggests that Samsung may not stop there. For the Galaxy Z Flip 7, expected in 2025, the company is reportedly studying an even thicker UTG layer and a redesigned hinge structure to accommodate the added bulk.

As for other changes expected on this generation, we already know that battery life could also be improved, with reports pointing toa larger 4,000 mAh batteryalthough charging speeds may remain unchanged at 25W.

Samsung will officially present its new foldable smartphones as soon as July 10 during an Unpacked conference which will this time be held in Paris. We will obviously not fail to check for ourselves whether or not the screen crease is less visible than the previous generation.
