Already visually masterful, The Last of Us Part II will be entitled to a remaster on January 19, but what is it worth on this point compared to the original?
This will be released for now exclusively on PS5, and will allow you to enjoy Naughty Dog’s masterpiece in the best conditions, with a Loyalty mode and a Performance mode. The YouTube channel ElAnalistaDeBits has released a very detailed video, available above, aimed at comparing on all possible points the differences between the remaster and the original game on PS4 and PS4 Pro.
You should not blink because of the spores
As a preamble, let’s start by saying that, upon its release in 2020, The Last of Us Part II was already certainly one of the most beautiful games on the PS4. Naughty Dog’s title presented itself as a magnificent swan song for the console, before it abdicated its throne for the PS5. Its upgrade to the latter only reinforced this observation, gaining 30 frames per second in the process.
So, this remaster deployed only a few years later will not make the original game fundamentally more beautiful. The whole thing certainly gains in sharpness, especially compared to the “fat” PS4 version, but the difference beyond that will not immediately be obvious.
They say that the devil is in the details, and that’s precisely where the remaster refines the angles. The rendering of water, the anisotropic filter and even the display distance have seen a notable improvement. However, these are not elements that we will dwell on when the infected really want to plant mushrooms in our carotid artery.
On the other hand, we will appreciate the greatly reduced loading times thanks to the PS5’s SSD, as well as the enormous gain in fluidity brought in particular by the Performance mode (between 1440p and 4K), which can approach 100 frames per second with VRR. (provided you have a compatible TV). Even Fidelity mode, which aims for 4K at a constant 30 frames per second, can achieve a higher frame rate thanks to VRR.
Is this remaster of a great game worth the cost?
It will depend on each person’s sensitivity. Those who have never played the original game will find in this 50 euro cake the ultimate version of a very great title. Besides the improved graphics, The Last of Us Part II Remastered features full support for the DualSense controller features, a free guitar mode, three levels that were removed from the final product, with a sort of making-of from the developers, and finally No Returna rogue-lite mode focused on combat.
If you already have The Last of Us Part It, however be aware that the remaster can be obtained in a form of “upgrade”. As soon as it is released on January 19, those who own the original version, both physically and digitally, will be able to purchase it for a much more honest sum of 10 euros. In the case of the physical version, it will be necessary to play the remaster to have the disc in the console drive.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has undoubtedly learned from its mistake regarding the monetization of the PS5 remaster of the first The Last of Us (while a remaster on PS4 had already been released previously). This was in fact only offered at the particularly prohibitive price of 80 euros. Despite a “softer” price for this new remaster, we can still question the relevance of such an operation for a game released only four years ago. Everyone will have their own opinion, but this was probably a quick and easy way for Naughty Dog to get back on track after experiencing significant health scares of late.
