The German Christian Democrats are arguing about the quota for women at their party conference. In the end, it is accepted with an absolute majority. The party leader Friedrich Merz had personally campaigned for them.

After a heated debate, the CDU gave itself a quota for women at its federal party conference in Hanover. The application, which was approved by the entire federal executive board, received a majority of 559 to 409 votes on Friday evening. As of next year, a binding women’s quota of one third will apply in elections to board positions from the district level. It will be gradually increased to 50 percent by July 2025 and is to be evaluated in 2027. Since it was a matter of changing the statutes, an absolute majority of 501 of the 1001 delegates entitled to vote was required.
