On Kolioutchine Island, between Alaska and Russia, bears have squatted an old weather station.
The largest terrestrial predator treats itself to an isba to spend the summer. And it’s not a Christmas story. Nobody complains about the arrival of these bulky tenants since the block is uninhabited today. The animals invaded the buildings built in 1934 for a Soviet scientific mission abandoned almost sixty years later. Amazement of the Russian photographer, who, after several weeks along the coasts of Arctic Russia, finally finds the bears he was looking for. But not where he imagined it.

“We were challenged by movements in front of the windows of this abandoned house,” says Dmitry Kokh. A meeting all the more unusual as the lord of the Far North still lives alone. With the melting of the pack ice, the animal ventures onto the tundra, where it finds some mosses and lichens to supplement its diet while waiting for the sea ice to reform.
