The Google Pixel 8a would have a great advantage over its big brothers

A new leak relating to the technical specifications of the Pixel 8a suggests that the device would have wired charging a little faster than that long offered on Google’s affordable smartphones.

What if the Pixel 8a had fast charging… a little faster than that of its predecessors the Pixel 7a and Pixel 6a? The question is raised by a new leak from Yogesh Brar. Sometimes well informed, this Indian engineer shared on X (formerly Twitter) the presumed (and relatively complete) technical sheet of the device.

The opportunity to see that this new information largely supports the robot portrait that we had drawn up of the Pixel 8a, but we also note that this new Pixel 8a would rely on 27 W wired charging, equivalent to that of the Pixel 8 “classic”. Until now, Google’s affordable smartphones, grouped in the “a” range, were limited to only 18W charging support. The Pixel 8a would therefore benefit from an interesting improvement in this area.

Pixel 8a: towards more efficient fast charging?

And for good reason, with their 18 W charging, the Pixel 7a and 6a recharged very slowly. The Pixel 7a thus required more than an hour and a half to fill up with energy. An eternity when certain competing models (Chinese in particular) manage to recover 100% autonomy in just under half an hour.

By moving to 27 W, we can hope that the Pixel 8a will do better than its predecessor in this area, without changing the face of the market or catching up with the competition. It goes without saying that while they are appreciable, Google’s progress in terms of fast charging remains far too timid compared to what other manufacturers (Samsung included) are currently offering.

For the rest, Yogesh Brar estimates that the new Pixel 8a could count on a slightly larger battery capacity than in the past: around 4,500 mAh according to him, compared to 4,385 mAh on the Pixel 7a. However, we do not know what the wireless charging speed offered by the Pixel 8a would be.

In any case, Google’s new mid-range smartphone could arrive on the market in May, after the next Google I/O conference, and at a price potentially between $500 and $600 excluding taxes depending on Yogesh Brar.
