With its Gorilla Glass, Corning has largely established itself in the protective glass market for smartphones. For more than sixteen years, the firm has been selling its expertise to the vast majority of players in the industry, and continues to improve its formula to remain the leader in its segment. A strategy that has enabled it to equip more than 8 billion smartphones since it has been working on the subject.
The company has just lifted the veil on the Gorilla Glass Victus 2, a reinforced glass sheet supposed to improve the resistance of the latest generation screens. This formula unsurprisingly uses the same principle as Gorilla Glass Victus Plus, but focuses on the damage caused by rough floors such as concrete or asphalt.
On its Youtube channel, the firm explains that the Victus can allow a device to fall without damage at a height of one meter on concrete and up to two meters on asphalt. Obviously, it works on video, but it is very difficult to be convinced of this in all cases. Especially since a smartphone rarely falls “exactly” face down and often it is the angles that pay the price for our clumsiness.
A glass that weighs
Through its creative process, Corning emphasizes that our smartphones are getting bigger and heavier. Smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 or the Oppo Find X5 Pro prove it to us.
It was therefore necessary to use test specimens displaying a higher weight for the test protocols of the Victus 2. The firm specifies, however, that this version is thinner than the previous one, and does not offer additional protection against scratches.
It now faces new challenges, in particular with the democratization of models with folding screens. Indeed, repeated bending is a crucial factor to take into account when designing glass sheets, since the moving part is logically more stressed.
