Presented as a game changer of AI ChatGPTthe GPT Store is now available, we explain how to access it and what this new platform has in store for you.

After a delayed and highly anticipated launch, the GPT Store is finally revealed. Here we explore what this platform means for the future of conversational AI, the opportunities it offers creators, and how it could change the way we interact with services we use every day.

But what is a GPT?

To begin, let’s talk about GPTs (Generative Pre-trained Transformers). GPTs are personalized versions of this technology, designed to accomplish specific tasks in daily life, at work or even at home. Like the launch of the App Store in 2008, which revolutionized the distribution of software on mobile devices, GPTs are versions of ChatGPT specialized in a specific domain. A fusion between personalized instructions and plugins, they act as an overlay to the general ChatGPT model, adding either additional functionalities through APIs, or specific knowledge on a subject, and sometimes even both!

What is the GPT Store?

The GPT Store was initially announced in November during DevDay alongside GPTs. Designed as an “App Store” for personalized chatbots integrated into ChatGPT, the GPT Store aims to facilitate the publication and curation of GPTs. However, its launch, initially planned shortly after the announcement, experienced a significant delay. According to OpenAI, this additional time was necessary to refine the platform and ensure it meets high expectations for performance, security and usability. The delay in launch was also attributed to the unrest that rocked OpenAI from late November to early December. As a reminder, the CEO. Sam Altman was fired before finally returning to his duties after two weeks.

How it works ?

The operation of the GPT Store is relatively simple, providing users with a user experience similar to an application store. Users, after subscribing to one of ChatGPT’s premium plans, can access the GPT Store via the dedicated “Explore GPT” tab in the web client or app. Once in the store, they can browse a variety of chatbots organized by categories such as education, programming, lifestyle, and more. Each chatbot is the result of the work of OpenAI’s partners and community of creators, offering personalized solutions for specific needs. Curation work is carried out every week to highlight 4 GPTs on the home page.

For creators, creating a chatbot for the GPT Store is made accessible thanks to OpenAI’s GPT Builder tool, which we have already used. This process does not require advanced programming skills, as builders can define the capabilities of their GPT in natural language. However, you will need to verify your manufacturer profile from the settings using a domain name that you own.

OpenAI has also implemented a rigorous review system to ensure that all listed chatbots meet the company’s standards and ethical guidelines. This system combines automated and human reviews, ensuring the compliance and quality of the chatbots offered.

Understanding the guidelines

To maintain a healthy and secure environment within the GPT Store, OpenAI has established a strict set of guidelines that all users must follow. These rules are designed to ensure that chatbots created do not violate ethical, legal, or security standards. For example, chatbots must not promote inappropriate, discriminatory or illegal content. In addition, they must respect the principles of confidentiality and data security. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in the removal of the affected chatbot from the GPT Store and, in some cases, suspension or banning of the user from the platform. OpenAI employs a mix of automated and human reviews to monitor compliance, and also encourages the user community to report any chatbot that appears to be breaking the rules.

Not many French-speaking creations at the moment

Currently, the GPT Store presents a limited number of French-speaking creations. This situation perhaps reflects the initial stage of deployment of the platform as well as the geographical and linguistic distribution of the initial builders, mainly English-speaking. However, this dynamic is likely to change quickly as more French-speaking users adopt ChatGPT in its paid version. The growing engagement of the French-speaking builder community could enrich the GPT Store with more diverse applications adapted to the specific needs of French-speaking users, thus paving the way for wider adoption and a more personalized user experience for the French-speaking public, a virtuous circle therefore.

Monetization, not for right away, not for everyone

When it comes to monetization within the GPT Store, OpenAI has taken a gradual and thoughtful approach. Although builders cannot yet charge directly for the use of their chatbots, OpenAI plans to launch a compensation program that will allow creators to generate revenue. This program, planned to be implemented during the first quarter, will reward them based on user engagement with their chatbots.

This future monetization strategy is designed to encourage users to create high-quality and engaging chatbots. By focusing on user engagement as a remuneration criterion, OpenAI aims to promote an ecosystem where creativity, usefulness and innovation are rewarded. Although the precise details of the remuneration program are not yet available, we know that American users will be the first to benefit from it, although no release window has been given apart from a vague “first quarter 2024” . Furthermore, OpenAI is not a pioneer in the field, its competitor Quora already practicing a monetization program with its chatbot platform, Poe.
