It’s rocked out for Catherine the Great: The series “The Great”, in which Russia’s empress danced to AC/DC, will not be continued.

Series fans have to digest this news first: The US series “The Great” will not be continued despite three successful seasons, as the online portal “Deadline” reports. The American streaming service and client of the series, Hulu, on which “The Great” is broadcast in the USA, is said to have canceled a sequel.

Multiple Emmy-nominated series

The series, which was last seen in Germany on MGM+, uses fictional stories to poke fun at the life of the long-term Russian ruler Catherine the Great (1762-1796). Since it started broadcasting in 2020, “The Great” has not only been able to unite a worldwide fan base, it has also convinced TV critics with its unconventional approach to the life of Russia’s longest-serving ruler. So far, the series has received seven Emmy nominations, among other things, won an Emmy for costume design in 2022 and helped leading actress Elle Fanning (25, Catherine the Great) win a Golden Globe nomination in 2021 and 2022. It is all the more incomprehensible that the series is now to be discontinued. The streaming service Hulu has not yet commented on the reasons.

That’s what “The Great” is about

The series, which the creators themselves describe as “anti-historical”, describes the rise of Empress Catherine the Great from the humblest of circumstances to the absolute ruler of Russia in the 18th century. At her side: Emperor Peter III, played by Nicholas Hoult (33). Author and executive producer of the series is Tony McNamara (56). The final season three ended with Catherine the Great once again showing great leadership as she sported a new haircut and rocked out to AC/DC tunes.
