“The Grip of Vice”: is the film with Alyssa Milano that ignites Netflix worth the hot shot?

WE ZAPPED – The star of “Charmed” investigates the murder of his sister in this flat adaptation of a bestseller. The real mystery is not to know who the killer is but how this fiction could have risen to the top of the most watched programs on the platform.

“Everyone has secrets”, launches Alyssa Milano at the very end of a trailer viewed more than 1.3 million times on YouTube. That of Netflix is less confidential than the Coca-Cola recipe. Take some super-popular material, a headliner that audiences love, and you’re likely to find success with algorithm-fed subscribers. Adaptation of a bestseller by American Nora Roberts, The Grip of Vice seems to have ticked all the boxes allowing him to climb to the top step of the podium.

Not exactly innovative, not exactly entertaining either and terribly predictable

Best-selling thriller author Grace Miller made a fortune writing about the murders of women. Reality meets fiction when his sister Kathleen is murdered in her home. Determined to discover the identity of the culprit, the novelist will lead the investigation with her neighbor policeman who is eyeing her. The real mystery is not knowing who the killer is, but how this flat fiction was able to establish itself as Netflix’s most-watched program when it was released on Thursday January 13.

the New York Times speak of it as “the Cluedo version of a Hallmark Christmas romance”. A criticism that is right on target as we had the impression of watching one of those thriller TV movies broadcast in the afternoon. Not really innovative, not really entertaining either. And terribly predictable. Grace discovers that her sister, an English teacher, was making ends meet by playing dominatrix on the Internet. Except that the universe of camgirls does not escape a dark representation full of clichés.

Is it this part of the plot that has caused some to compare The Grip of Vice at 50 Shades of Gray ? Without a doubt. But other than three harmless lashes on a couch, it’s not clear what the two stories have in common. This fiction is cheeky only in its title, Brazen in VO. Even Alyssa Milano and Sam Page, whom we adored in Charmed and The Bold Type, do not come to save much.

The catastrophic ratings on IMDb (3.9 out of 10) and Rotten Tomatoes (15% positive public reviews) should have alerted us. Even if it means spending 1h30 in front of Netflix, we advise fans of detective series to immerse themselves in one of the documentaries. “true crime story” whose platform has the secret. And romance lovers to wait for the arrival of season 2 of Bridgerton March 25.
