When does The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 start?

There is currently no official start date for “The Handmaid’s Tale” season 6, but the final episodes are unlikely to start on Hulu before 2023. As soon as there is more information here, you will find it out at Netzwelt.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 6: Storyline

Since the season 5 finale “The Handmaid’s Tale” hasn’t aired yet, little can be said about a possible plot for season 6.

In an interview with Deadline, Miller revealed that Season 6 will both wrap up June’s story while creating a natural transition to the planned spin-off.

In the case of the ending to June’s story, however, Miller stressed that he might not stick strictly to Atwood’s template in The Testaments. Rather, he’s trying to create an ending that feels natural and also makes sense, because just because The Handmaid’s Tale comes to an end doesn’t necessarily mean that June’s life has ended too.

Miller sees the show as more of a glimpse into a particular slice of the character’s life, and just as she had a life before, she will have a life after, only we can’t exactly track it anymore.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 6: Here’s how it will continue after the end of the series

In 2019, two years after the start of the series and 34 years after the first novel, Margaret Atwood published The Testaments, a sequel to her story set 15 years later and about the fall of Gilead. Bruce Miller recently announced that he is already planning a series adaptation of the novel’s sequel in a spin-off after the end of “The Handmaid’s Tale”.

In this new, continuing story, the author actually made sure that the plot does not contradict the series. So Miller won’t have much trouble finding a clean connection to his hit series.

While June’s fate has been left open in the books, giving the Hulu series some freedom, June’s daughters, Hannah and Nicole, will play important roles in the sequel. Of course, this is also interesting with regard to the mother series, since it not only guarantees their survival in “The Handmaid’s Tale”, but also otherwise specifies where they should be at the end of the series.

However, in the case of “The Handmaid’s Tale” the template was used much more freely and so the series is based on the novel by Margaret Atwood, but the plot from “The Handmaid’s Tale” was already completely told in season 1. Subsequent seasons continued the story freely, but working closely with Atwood. Therefore, changes to the plot cannot be completely ruled out.

Since season 6 of “The Handmaid’s Tale” will not be released on Hulu until 2023, “The Testaments” should not expect us until 2024 at the earliest. Due to the jump in time of the spin-offs, there will hardly be a reunion with well-known actors, but Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia should also appear again in “The Testaments”. However, we will probably only find out more in the coming months when production slowly gets rolling.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 6: Production and Cast

Since Hulu is still airing episodes of Season 5, it’s not yet possible to say with any certainty which characters will appear in the final season. After all, the series is known for its shocking and unexpected twists, and perhaps not all previous characters will survive the upcoming episodes.

However, when the current cast fully reunites in Season 6, we can look forward to a reunion with Elisabeth Moss (June), Bradley Whitford (Commander Lawrence), Yvonne Strahovski (Serena Joy), Max Minghella (Nick Blaine), OT Fagbenle ( Luke), Samira Wiley (Moira), Ann Dowd (Aunt Lydia), Madeline Brewer (Janine), Amanda Brugel (Rita) and Sam Jaeger (Mark Tuello).

At least almost all of the actors and actresses listed above announced the continuation of the series in season 6 with a short video via Instagram. The only one missing here is Janine actor Madeline Brewer. Whether this will really return in Season 6 remains to be seen.

Likewise, Bruce Miller is expected to serve as showrunner again, and barring anything to the contrary, we can assume Marissa Jo Cerar will also return as producer

As a result of Alexis Bledel’s departure from the series, her character Emily was no longer present in Season 5. However, Miller hinted to US online magazine Entertainment Tonight that he hasn’t given up hope that the character will return in the final season. According to Miller, Bledel’s character hasn’t “reached the end of her journey” and “the door remains open to a possible return.”
