On Wednesday January 8, 2020, Carlos Ghosn gave a press conference from Lebanon delivering his first explanations since his incredible flight from Japan. The opportunity for him to return to the case in which he is accused of misuse of corporate assets and tax evasion. But just before this event, The Obs had revealed the obscure family past of the former CEO of Renault and Nissan. In an article titled “The family tragedy that Carlos Ghosn has always hidden“, the weekly returned to the incredible destiny of the father of the business manager, Jorge Ghosn.
Born in Brazil, heir to the family business with his brothers, Carlos Ghosn’s father was sentenced to death and spent many years in prison, revealed L’Obs. In 1960, the lifeless body of a priest from northern Beirut was found on the side of a road, shot twice. The presence of the car belonging to the wife of Jorge Ghosn leads to the arrest of the latter as well as an accomplice. Over the years, the investigation will never be able to establish who fired the shots, the two men accusing each other. They will eventually both be sentenced to death. But neither of them will see their sentence executed: Jorge Ghosn sees his sentence reduced, when his accomplice fled by sawing the bars of his cell.
“Ghost Father”
A destiny on which Carlos Ghosn, himself a father, never gave himself up. Even if, as L’Obs writes, “in Beirut, where the fate of Carlos Ghosn’s father is known to a few people, he says to himself that it is impossible to understand the former CEO of Renault and Nissan (…) without knowing the real story of his father“. His secrets to the various media or in his autobiography focused more on the figure of his paternal grandfather. Le Monde had thus described his grandfather as “true family hero” in a portrait devoted to the ousted CEO. The newspaper even mentioned a “ghost father“.”Over the pages and years, Jorge disappears from radar screens, as if erased from memories.“, wrote Le Monde without being able to know why. We now know the reasons for this silence.
