The home world championships in orienteering in July will take place in the forests of Flims Laax. World champion Matthias Kyburz is currently in preparation.

The Orienteering World Championships will take place in Flims Laax between July 11th and 16th. A total of 300 athletes from 50 nations will fight for medals in three disciplines each. The first competitions will take place on Thursday, July 13, over the long distance. The middle distance is two days later, before the relay races are the last highlight on Sunday. SRF broadcasts all disciplines live.

The right mix is required

The World Cup is taking place in Switzerland for the fourth time. In the forests of Flims Laax, reigning world champion Matthias Kyburz has big plans: “I hope that I can win a medal in one of the two individual disciplines. In the relay, we want to run for the medals at the home World Championships.”

In order to achieve this goal, the 33-year-old is looking for the right balance. «The last phase before title fights is not that easy. We’ve had a few intense sessions, but we’re also taking some rest. But it’s important not to sag too much,” says Kyburz.

Kyburz: “That’s what we orienteerers love”

Although it is a home World Cup, according to Kyburz, the Swiss do not necessarily have an advantage: “We actually only expect to have an advantage in the steep sections of the long distance. The Scandinavians will certainly also feel very comfortable in the technical passages. The site wasn’t chosen for us.”

Nevertheless, the world champion is really looking forward to the races: “It’s a beautiful area. However, it is not only beautiful, but also technically difficult. That’s what we orienteerers love.”
