The Huawei Mate 50 Pro takes its first steps in Europe with a fabulous price

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro arrives in Europe at a price of 1199 euros. This price falls within the norm of those charged in the very high-end segment, but it is far too high for a smartphone unable to access Google services and connect to 5G.

In early September, the Huawei Mate 50 Pro was made official in China. The ultra high-end smartphone had not yet set foot in Europe, however. This is now done with first incursions into the United Kingdom and Germany. However, thanks to our Germanic neighbors, we know the price in euros of the telephone. Attention, it is not given.

Count 1199 euros including tax to get the Mate 50 Pro on the Huawei Germany merchant site. At that price, you’ll get the single configuration of 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. An introductory offer is also available and allows consumers to receive a pair of Huawei Freebuds Pro 2 worth 199 euros.

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro is a smartphone that wants to play in the court of ultra high-end models with solid features: 6.74-inch curved OLED screen and 120 Hz (2616 × 1212 pixels), Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, charger 66 W for a 4700 mAh battery and, above all, a huge promise in photography. At the rear, the large circular block has a 50-megapixel main sensor with a variable aperture lens (f / 1.4 to f / 4.0). It also has an ultra wide-angle of 13 Mpx (f / 2.2) and a telephoto lens of 64 Mpx (f / 3.5). Added to this is Huawei’s expertise in the field, whose photo prowess has often been praised.

Why is the Huawei Mate 50 Pro too expensive?

A price of 1199 euros therefore does not seem, at first glance, that incredible compared to the competition, which does not hesitate to raise the price even higher on certain models. However, the Huawei Mate 50 Pro has two huge shortcomings that frankly make this price too expensive. The smartphone is not compatible with the 5G network and it does not include Google services.

These two major flaws are direct consequences of the US embargo imposed on Huawei. The latter is accused by Washington of using its network infrastructure to carry out espionage activities for the benefit of China. The administrations of Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden therefore imposed strict restrictions preventing the firm from accessing certain key technologies.

In Europe, the Mate 50 Pro is therefore an Android smartphone – and not HarmonyOS as in China – which aims to sell for more than 1000 euros without being able to use Google applications, neither the Play Store nor the many apps using APIs. from the Mountain View firm. On top of that, it also cannot connect to the last generation network. There are far too many compromises.

A situation that will last

Note that Huawei’s situation is not likely to improve. Tensions between Washington and Beijing continue to escalate, and recently a US embargo was imposed on all of China.

As for the Mate 50 Pro, it should probably soon arrive in France. The price may potentially change slightly compared to the German rate, but it should remain in the same order of magnitude.

US embargo against China: why Samsung enjoys preferential treatment

With two strategic factories affected, Samsung could have been heavily affected by the very severe embargo of the United States against China. However, the South Korean giant benefits from a one-year exemption.
