Not only was the story of Katniss Everdeen concluded after three books and four films, the cruel Hunger Games also came to a bittersweet end after a final revolution. That’s good for the inhabitants of Panem, but for the producers of the Lionsgate film studio, it was terrible news. A rounded ending ultimately nipped the hope of further lucrative “The Hunger Games” sequels in the bud – or so they thought.

In 2020, however, author Suzanne Collins came up with a solution: “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” took a cue from George Lucas’ “Star Wars” prequels and took us back to the dark beginnings. Although no well-known characters from the original trilogy returned except for antagonist Coriolanus Snow, the story became a hit – as a novel and also in the cinema.

Now this game is repeating itself once again. “Sunrise on the Reaping” by Suzanne Collins will be released in March 2025 and will once again focus on the Hunger Games at a time when Katniss was not even born. After “The Ballad of Songbirds of Snakes” we now jump 40 years into the future.

For the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the second anniversary, the rules were slightly adjusted. This time, each district had to send four tributes, two boys and two girls, into the arena. The winner of these games is also known: Haymitch Abernathy.

Fans have long wanted a story about Haymitch, who has been a reader favorite since the first “Panem” novel. This wish is now being fulfilled, but according to Suzanne Collins, the Scottish philosopher David Hume inspired her to return to the world of Panem, as she revealed in a statement.

In Sunrise on the Reaping I was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and, in his words, ‘the ease with which the many are ruled by the few’. The story also lent itself to a deeper exploration of the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question ‘Real or not real?’ seems to me more pressing every day.

Not surprisingly, a film adaptation of the same name was announced just a few hours after the new novel was announced. In the USA, “Sunrise on the Reaping” will be released in cinemas on November 20, 2026, and in Germany it is expected to be released a day earlier. Of course, there will be a completely new cast again, as Woody Harrelson cannot play 16-year-old Haymitch.
