Bad news if you were impatiently waiting for Volkswagen’s future ID.2 to make the jump to electric.

Indeed, this 100% electric model which has not yet seen the light of day is already seeing its price increase…

The Volkswagen ID.2 not so “cheap”, after all…

At the end of 2022, and as Volkswagen recently celebrated the half-million ID vehicles sold worldwide, the German group announced various developments regarding its MEB+ platform. Added to this is the upcoming arrival of an SUV version of its very popular ID.3, but Volkswagen has also wanted to return to the ID.2 project.

The “small” electric Volkswagen should arrive on the market before the year 2026. This new ID.2 will be based on the ID.Life concept and was initially to be sold for around 20,000 euros “only”. But all that was before the tragedy, of course…

From 20,000 to 25,000 euros

Indeed, in a recent press release, the German brand indicated that this future Volkswagen ID.2 would finally be displayed at a price close to 25,000 euros. This tariff adjustment has not been explained by the German brand, even if we can assume that the increase in the price of the various materials is not foreign to it.

Volkswagen is far from being the only player in the automotive market to want to offer an affordable electric city car… without succeeding. This does not prevent its CEO from confirming a new investment of 460 million euros in the transition to the electrification of its main plant, located in Wolfsburg.

We will obviously have to wait a few more months to know everything about this future ID.2, and in particular its final sale price. Recently, the brand’s sales director indicated that Volkswagen was aiming to leave the thermal engine vehicle market between 2033 and 2035 to focus on electrics. On the other hand, we still do not know when the electric car will really become “affordable” for motorists.
