The increase in the price of SSDs does not seem to be in doubt. The question is how much it will be.

The demand for memory chips of all kinds has never been so strong and the pressure is particularly high around the manufacturers of NAND, this type of memory which is found in particular on SSDs.

Samsung is one of the main producers worldwide and the South Korean company intends to increase its prices even more than observers had envisaged.

20% increase on the price of wafers?

It’s a classic mechanism, when demand is much higher than supply, suppliers first satisfy their customers who are ready to pay more to receive their products and prices rise. Inevitably.

In the case of NAND memory, things are even a little more subtle in that the investments to strengthen production lines and further refine manufacturing processes are colossal. In fact, the main production companies have no qualms about increasing their prices since the additional profits earned go to financing the productive system.

Until now, analysts agreed on an expected increase at Samsung of around 10% on the price of NAND. In reality, if we are to believe the sources of Wccftechtoday it would rather be a question of progressing by around 20%.

Towards an increase in SSDs, smartphones

Relayed by our colleagues, the TrendForce reports evoke a decision “ unpredictable » from Samsung’s NAND division. On the contrary, the latter estimates that the quarterly increase thus planned makes it possible to compensate “ degraded income » over the previous months.

In reality, the fluctuation in the price of NAND wafers dates back to at least last August. It still seems difficult to determine to what extent this increase will increase the cost of SSDs, but the first estimates speak of 8 to 13%. That said, in the mobile industry, it would be a question of an increase in final prices of 10 to 15%.

This is not the first time that Samsung and its competitors in the NAND market have attempted to influence prices. Previous attempts have not had the desired effect and even if current demand is expected to increase further with the development of AI, it is difficult to know whether this offensive will be more successful… for NAND manufacturers.

What are the best M.2 SSD and 2.5 SSD? Comparison 2023

What is the best SSD? The SSD is the essential companion of any PC, whether it is a portable model or a “desktop tower”. The fact remains that the SSD category is not homogeneous, so we are looking at its case through a selection of the best models in M.2 NVMe format, but also some 2.5 inch SATA.
