The interest of the French for the refurbished is growing, especially on the smartphone side

In partnership with the Ifop polling institute and the Ademe ecological transition agency, the French refurbisher Smaaart presented the fifth edition of its annual refurbished barometer. At the end of a survey of a representative sample of 1,201 people aged 18 to 65, we find that the French find it easier to consider buying a refurbished device when it comes to a smartphone, rather than a laptop. Indeed, they are 62% to declare having bought or want to acquire a refurbished smartphone (+6 points compared to 2021), but still only 31% when it comes to a laptop PC.

Among the advantages of the refurbished smartphone, the respondents particularly favor the price (41%), the guarantee (12%) and the preservation of the environment (10%). On the computer side, the price is also at the top of the motivations (32%), followed by access to a machine with higher technical characteristics (12%) and the guarantee offered (10%). In both cases, the main fears raised relate to the lifespan of the refurbished device or its reliability. Logical when you know that 66% of respondents would hope to be able to keep a refurbished computer for up to five years (34% more than a chandelier).

As we have understood, if the prospects for development of the laptop computer sector are encouraging, the smartphone remains the king of refurbished products. As proof, 37% of respondents have already bought a phone for themselves or a loved one from a refurbisher. Only 20% did so in October 2018. The market was undeniably structured in a favorable context of ecological emergency and generalized inflation.

Growing environmental awareness

This is, moreover, an interesting aspect of this survey, which highlights an ever-increasing ecological awareness among consumers, 32% of whom consider themselves “more responsible” today than before the health crisis (+3 points in one year). This is also the reason why more and more French people (62% of respondents, +3 points) have already sold or are considering selling their old telephone to a refurbisher in order to maintain this virtuous circle, give them a second life and finance a renewal. of device. It’s even more (75%) for people who have already acquired (or intend to) a refurbished phone.

“The market for refurbished products has been considerably structured this year, in particular with the arrival of a new decree, on February 17, making it possible to regulate the terms ‘reconditioned’ and ‘reconditioned product’. At the same time, the new Qualicert SGS service certification ‘reconditioning activities’ validates the quality of the certificate holder’s reconditioning operations […] This reassures the consumer about the quality of the processes and the reliability of the products, and gives him indicators to choose quality reconditioned products”comments Jean-Christophe Estoudre, president of Smaaart.
