In the works for a few weeks, the “Unsubscribe” button dedicated to Gmail for iOS is being deployed.
Since November, Google teams have been internally testing a new tool designed to make it easier to unsubscribe from newsletters from Gmail. The objective is simple: to allow those who wish to unsubscribe in one click from this mailing list to which they are subscribed, sometimes against their will, and from which it is often complicated to withdraw.
Newsletters, these sometimes (too) invasive digests of information
Newsletters, those condensed information bulletins sent periodically by email, are faithful companions for enthusiasts from various backgrounds. However, their reception can sometimes prove problematic, with certain platforms not hesitating to automatically register their customers, sometimes without their knowledge.
Also, receiving unwanted newsletters can quickly become a burden for many users, who sometimes have difficulty finding the option that will (finally!) allow them to unsubscribe. The latter is generally present at the bottom of each message, but in a very often tiny font.
Gmail for iOS, a new button to unsubscribe
Also, on the Google side, we are currently deploying a new functionality, integrated into Gmail, and aimed at allowing simplified unsubscription. For now, the option is available within iOS only, and is represented by an Unsubscribe button, displayed alongside the sender.
This way, instead of tapping the three-dot menu icon at the top of the message window and then looking for Report Spam (or scrolling to the bottom of the message and looking for the Unsubscribe button of the sender), this new solution proposed by Google is much more practical and saves time.
No scrolling to do, no option to search, simply a validation on a button displayed at the top of the newsletter, and the problem is solved.
It remains to be seen when this option will land on Android smartphones.
