The iPhone 14 should offer much better selfies and quality video calls

According to information from analyst ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 14 should benefit from a selfie module that is not only brighter, but also has autofocus.

Like all smartphone manufacturers, Apple now communicates strongly about the photo and video quality of its iPhones. The manufacturer is pushing the envelope both in terms of functionality – with ProRAW, ProRes or Cinematic mode – but also in terms of hardware.

On the latest iPhone 13 Pro, for example, the American manufacturer has integrated a larger main camera than that of 2020, now on a par with the photo module of the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Nevertheless, for selfies, Apple was still lagging behind.

However, this could change this year as Ming-Chi Kuo indicated in a tweet shared on Tuesday.

The front camera of four new iPhone 14 models in 2H22 would likely upgrade to AF (autofocus) & about f/1.9 aperture (vs. iPhone 13’s FF (fixed-focus) and f/2.2).

According to the analyst from TF International Securities, generally very well informed about Apple’s projects, the various iPhone 14s would see the integration of a better selfie camera, on the front. This would gain not only an autofocus, but also a lens with a larger aperture.

A selfie module better suited to video calls

In concrete terms, a lens with a wider focal aperture makes it possible to offer a brighter image, and therefore a more effective photo module in low light, but also with a shallower depth of field and therefore more background blur. An artistic choice generally favored for portraits and therefore particularly suitable for selfies. In fact, the arrival of a larger aperture will push Apple to integrate an autofocus, and no longer a fixed focus; a way for the manufacturer to allow users to take photos at a closer distance from their device while remaining sharp. “Autofocus support and a smaller f-number can provide a better depth of field effect for selfies and portrait mode. Moreover, autofocus can also improve focus effect for FaceTime call, video call or video streaming”says Ming-Chi Kuo in a second tweet.

While the iPhone 13 only benefited from an aperture of f / 2.2 on its selfie camera, the different iPhone 14s should therefore switch to an aperture of f / 1.9. Remember, however, that on such small sensors, an aperture gain cannot completely modify the perception and luminosity of the optics either.

As a reminder, the iPhone 14 should be launched in the fall. We obviously expect new processors, but also the disappearance of the notch, precisely to integrate the selfie camera. This would be replaced by a central punch in the shape of a pill which would carry not only the front camera, but also the 3D sensors necessary for Face ID facial recognition.
