The replacement of Lightning by USB-C will not improve the transfer speeds of the iPhone 15. But the iPhone 15 Pro will benefit from a more efficient connector.
In line with new European regulations, Apple will launch its next generation iPhone with a USB-C port on every model, replacing the historic proprietary Lightning connector.
Still USB 2.0
But according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, often well informed about future Apple products, you should not expect better speeds with this change, at least on the two standard models, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 More.
According to him, the USB-C socket on board both devices will support the USB 2.0 standard, just like Lightning. So there should be no improvement in wired transfer speed with this smartphone.
The switch from Lightning to USB-C will therefore only give consumers one advantage, that of being able to use the same cable for all their devices, to be able to lend their own, and to have one loaned to them in the event of need.
The iPhone 15 Pro better off
A few weeks ago already, we saw that Apple had the choice of USB 2.0 for the USB-C port of its new 10-inch iPad. So it seems likely that once again Ming-Chi Kuo’s information is correct.
For users who would like a more efficient USB-C port, they will have to turn to the iPhone 15 Pro or the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which should be equipped with a much more efficient connector. The analyst does not yet know with certainty which standard it will adopt, but at least predicts the presence of USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3. As a reminder, USB 4 v2 and Thunderbolt 4 are announced, but their marketing does not is not for now.
Finally, Ming-Chi Kuo believes that the upgrade of USB specifications initiated with the iPhone 15 Pro should motivate Android manufacturers to in turn offer more efficient USB-C on their high-end mobiles.
