the iPhone transforms into a payment terminal, this is how it works

Apple today announced the opening of the Tap to Pay service in France, which allows you to collect card payments with a simple iPhone, without a payment terminal. It is, for the moment, only proposed by a few partners.

Accepting bank card payments has never been easier for artisans, self-employed people, micro-retailers or associations. Over the last few years, a wide range of mobile payment terminals, inexpensive to purchase, has developed.

There’s something better: from now on, the terminal is no longer even necessary. Since today, professionals who wish can record bank card payments on a simple iPhone, as was already the case with Android mobiles.

In a communicationApple has in fact announced the availability in France of a new service called Tap to Pay (tap to pay) on iPhone. Inaugurated in spring 2022 in the United States, it was not yet active in France. To benefit from it, you must obviously act as a professional (individuals are not concerned). It is then sufficient to hold a relatively new iPhone (from the XS model released in 2018), updated with the latest version of the iOS operating system, andopen an account with a payment service provider partner of the service.

By card or Apple Pay

In France, these partners are still relatively limited. At launch, we find the brands of the BPCE group (Banques Populaires, Caisses d’Epargne and Payplug), as well as the specialized companies Adyen, myPOS, Revolut, SumUp, Viva Wallet and Worldline. They will soon be joined by BNP Paribas, Crdit Coopratif, Market Pay, Stancer and Stripe.

On the consumer side, network cards Visa, Mastercard or American Express (i.e. the vast majority of cards in circulation in France) are compatible, pending support in the coming weeks from the French CB acceptance network. iPhone owners can also pay with their mobile, thanks to Apple Pay.

Tap to Pay on iPhone is already available in all Apple Stores in France. He is also currently being deployed in certain retail stores, in particular those of the Christian Dior Couture brands, belonging to the LVMH group, Dyson, Rituals and Szane, specifies the Apple press release. The service is also integrated with L’Addition, a software suite on iPad intended for restaurateurs, and will soon appear at Sphora.
