On March 15, 2019, New Zealand experienced one of the country's worst atrocities. A 29-year-old man murdered 51 Muslim worshipers in mosques.

In New Zealand, an Australian national, white supremacist named Brenton Tarrant, opened fire on mosques in Christchurch. He had shot dead 51 people that day. This massacre marked the country but also the whole world. It is this Thursday, August 27 that the verdict of his trial was rendered. Brenton Tarrant was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The judge mentioned "the deep hatred" that pervaded the 29-year-old before adding: " It is up to the court to respond categorically of rejection in the face of such heinous wrongs. " He was thus found guilty of 51 murders, 40 attempted murders and an act of terrorism.

He is clearly the worst murderer in New Zealand

New Zealand is renowned for being one of the safest countries in the world, after Iceland. Before the killings in Christchurch, it had been decades since the country had suffered mass killings. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern explains: "The trauma of March 15 is not easy to heal, but today I hope it is the last time we have to hear or say the name of the terrorist responsible for it. " Indeed, the politician has always refused to pronounce the name of the assailant after the killings in Christchurch. As for the prosecutor, Mark Zarifeh, he considered that it was a "Unprecedented carnage in New Zealand's criminal history."
