The refusals multiply on the part of the guests at the coronation of King Charles III. A new distinguished guest has just withdrawn.

The White House announced Tuesday, April 4 that President Joe Biden would not go to the coronation of Charles III. “President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. spoke today with King Charles III, underscoring the strength of the relationship between our countries and the friendship between our peoples”, can we read on the White House website. Neverthelessthe American presidential couple will be well represented during the King’s coronation : “The President congratulated the King on his upcoming coronation and informed him that First Lady Jill Biden looked forward to attending on behalf of the United States.” “The President also expressed his desire to meet the King in the UK at a later date.” assured the White House, without giving more details on the date.

Joe Biden is not the first to withdraw from the event. Indeed, as our colleagues from Galathe king counted on the talents of several stars such as‘Adele, Harry Styles, Robbie Williams, the Spice Girls or even Ed Sheeran to perform at the coronation of the monarch. All unfortunately declined the invitation, for various reasons. Adele, for her part, did not justify her refusal. Likewise, the artist Elton John refused to come and sing at the event, explaining that he would be on a full European tour on that date. A choice that surprised many people, the 75-year-old artist being very close to Meghan Markle.

Will Meghan and Harry come to the coronation?

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have yet to respond to the King’s invitation. One thing is certain, they will in any case not be part of the carriage procession that will immediately follow the coronation. Indeed, Charles III wanted the latter to be done in reduced numbers and therefore de facto excluded his youngest son and his brother Prince Andrew. If they choose to come, Meghan and Harry will also likely have to expect to be given ‘average’ places into Westminster Abbey for the coronation ceremony. They will not be in the front row and may even be seated at a distance from the rest of the royal family.
