After eleven years of good and loyal service, Global Offensive finally abdicates his throne as king of competitive FPS on Steam for a sort of “sequel”.

Announced with great fanfare by Valve last March, Counter-Strike 2 is indeed officially released on Steam! This free update gives a welcome refresh to the graphics and physics of the venerable FPS, in addition to drastically improving the responsiveness of the servers. We can truly speak of an abdication for the previous version, this one having simply disappeared from the Valve platform.

Long live the king, for the people

Available since this summer in the form of a closed test (and to a certain extent for others through a leak), Counter-Strike 2 this time truly takes its place as Valve’s flagship competitive FPS. Global Offensive has in fact been completely wiped off the map, those who already have the game having to download this brand new version, without breaking the bank.

For others, know that Counter-Strike 2 will require 27 GB of free space, and particularly modest system requirements: a graphics card with at least 1 GB of memory, DirectX 11 compatible; a 4-thread Intel Core i5-750 processor; and 8 GB of RAM.

A real new version

The new heir to an illustrious lineage is therefore playable even on old machines. However, Counter-Strike 2 well deserves its name as a new version, as it intends to bring beautiful things. Let us remember that the title runs with the Source 2 engine, where Global Offensive was still stuck on the first version. The result is enhanced visual quality and even more realistic physics (especially with regard to smoke).

But the real novelty of this version of the king of competitive FPS is undoubtedly the change made to the responsiveness of the servers. Exit indeed the tickrate: place for the sub-tick! In essence, this new system from Valve intends to ensure that the server knows exactly when a player has pressed a key. On paper, this will therefore make the parties Counter-Strike 2 even more deadly, in every sense of the word. NVIDIA Reflex technology also comes to the rescue in this area, provided of course that you have a compatible graphics card.

However, it remains to be seen whether Valve has taken the same care in the fight against cheating, Global Offensive having had a painful history with this practice, to say the least. In any case, fans of the license have something to rejoice after 11 years of almost unchallenged reign in its category for CS:GOwith the possible exception of a certain Valorant at Riot Games.
