Long presented as a serious rival of Tesla, particularly in the segment of electric pickups and SUVs, Rivian has finally gone through a delicate year 2022. Between sales targets not achieved and a broken partnership with Mercedes… after only three months of collaboration, the company is at a standstill. This does not prevent him from eyeing the European market within at least three years.
In short, Rivian’s prospects in the electric car market are very vague today, as it had to lay off 6% of its workforce at the start of February 2023 – this is the second wave of departures in a year. However, the Californian firm remains ambitious and even wants to position itself on a new type of vehicle: electric bicycles.
Patents already held
In any case, this is what the very serious reports Bloomberg, according to which the managing director of Rivian announced to his employees his ambitions in this area. Sources close to the file wishing to remain anonymous confirmed the information to the American media. For now, a team of engineers is already working on it.
Inevitably, no technical information or release date has yet leaked. It is still far too early to learn more about this. On the other hand, Bloomberg tells us that Rivian holds many patents relating to components of electric bicycles, as well as to the conceptual aspect.
VAE often courted by manufacturers
This decision would be reminiscent of many others. Indeed, many car manufacturers are interested in one way or another in pedelecs. Whether for marketing or strategic purposes, all the reasons seem good to get started.
We can mention Porsche and Hummer, but also Seat, Mercedes or Red Bull on the chessboard of electric scooters. It’s hard to say if Rivian will tackle the Old Continent, even though he will have to convince the American public in the first place.
