A sequel to “The Last of Us” is confirmed, but a spin-off could have told the backstory of Bill and Frank. However, showrunner Craig Mazin rules out such a series.
In 2023, “The Last of Us” achieved the feat of not only convincing as a video game adaptation with an extremely successful film adaptation of the original, but also being praised for the deviations from the source material.
The third episode from season 1, titled “Long, Long Time,” is one of the most popular series episodes in recent years, and “The Last of Us” showrunner Craig Mazin took the greatest liberties here. After winning an Emmy for his portrayal of Bill, Nick Offerman spoke about his character’s possible return.
Bill & Frank – the musical?
As popular as the story of Bill and Frank was in “The Last of Us”, a reunion with the characters also seems impossible. The only solution is a spin-off series that tells the backstory of Bill and Frank – an idea that Nick Offerman is certainly interested in.
[Eine Prequel-Serie] was definitely considered. I think we suggested a whole mini-series with a backstory of their lives before they meet. It could be a musical! We are not lacking in ideas. We’ll just see what Craig [Mazin] and Neil [Druckmann] come up with.

A musical series from the world of “The Last of Us” would have been a bit too bizarre, but apart from that, a prequel about Bill and Frank would have had potential. However, showrunner Craig Mazin apparently sees things differently. During the Emmy Awards, he was also asked about a Bill and Frank prequel and had a sobering opinion about it:
I’m very proud of the episode we did with Bill and Frank. There will be no more Bill and Frank. Nick joked about a prequel, which was kind of a joke. We are very happy with what we have achieved.

For the time being, of course, Season 2 of “The Last of Us” is the focus of HBO. Filming is scheduled to begin in February 2024, with the new episodes expected to start in 2025. Then there would certainly be time for a spin-off that would shorten the long wait for season 3 – only Bill and Frank will certainly not be the focus.
