The clickers make noises so disgusting it makes your toenails curl up on HBO’s The Last of Us. But how did these abnormal sounds come about? This is revealed to us by a video that was shared on Twitter.

The short clip shows voice actress Misty Lee and Phillip Kovats during a recording session for Episode 2’s clicker sounds. Both Lee and Kovats were experienced clicker voice actors at the time of the recording. Because alongside Lani Minella, they already lent their voices to the infected creatures in the “The Last of Us” video games.

On Twitter, a user joked about living with one of the voice actors and hearing the noise every day. Voice actor Misty Lee responded to this comment and confirmed that she mimicked the lute while watching the series with her husband. According to them, the eerie noises scared them extremely.

The scene we get to see in the video is one of the first real encounters with the infected in the first season of The Last of Us. Joel, Ellie and Tess must face off against the clickers, allowing viewers to learn how the monsters navigate and find their next victim.
